Trump to sue BBC for 'anywhere between $1billion to $5billion' despite apology

Donald Trump has stated that he is going to sue the BBC for the misleading speech edits made for between $1 billion and $5 billion

Trump on Air Force One overnight on Saturday confirmed he was going to take legal action against the BBC as he said:

“We’ll sue them for anywhere between a billion and five billion, probably sometime next week.”

He added: “They cheated. They changed the words coming out of my mouth.”

This is despite the BBC apologising as Trump requested. However, the broadcaster said they were not going to compensate the US President.

Trump has also stated that he was going to discuss the issue with Sir Keir Starmer as “the people of the UK are very angry”.

Due to the backlash from the edit, both Tim Davie, the director-general for the BBC, and Deborah Turness, the BBC News Chief Executive, resigned from their roles. Turness has yet insisted that there is ‘no institutional bias at BBC News’.

The edit’s purpose appeared to cause ‘reputational harm’ according to Trump. Part of the edit excluded the part where Trump said he wanted to demonstrate and support him peacefully.

This case would be a difficult one to pursue for Trump though as the deadline to bring the case in courts in England expired over a year ago.

On the other hand, Florida has a two-year limit, but Trump faces a tough level of legal standards bringing a defamation case in the US.

Trump has said that he will likely begin proceedings next week.
